While the aging process is normal and something that everyone can expect to go through, many people want to find ways of aging more gracefully. Dermal fillers can help to soften the appearance of aging, and some products can even help support your body in the production of collagen and elastin which can keep your skin looking youthful and refreshed.

At The Face Place in Baton Rouge, LA, we offer several different types of dermal fillers to help give each of our patients the aesthetic they are looking for. From subtle lifting and filling of deep lines and wrinkles to more dramatic volume and contouring in the lips or jawline, we have products that can achieve them all.

What Are Dermal Fillers and How Can They Be Used? | The Facial Place

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are a wide range of products used to treat cosmetic concerns such as lines and wrinkles, loss of volume and elasticity, and decreased collagen production, particularly in the facial area. They are injectable products that are biocompatible and provide temporary, but often long-lasting results.

What Are the Different Types of Dermal Fillers?

While some of the most common products are hyaluronic acid gels that help to add volume to areas such as the cheeks, lips, or chin, other injectables are made with ingredients that primarily function to help stimulate collagen production. Often both types of dermal fillers can be used to help address different concerns.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that your body already produces. It can be found in many different body areas such as the eyes, the skin, and the joints. This clear, slippery material helps to keep these areas of your body hydrated since it attracts water molecules. In dermal fillers, the hyaluronic acid is synthetically produced but is bioidentical with the HA found in your body. Because of this, very few sensitivities are associated with these products, and the body can naturally break down the dermal fillers over time. At our clinic, we offer different brands of HA fillers such as Restylane® and Juvéderm®.

Radiesse®

Radiesse is a dermal filler made from calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) and is FDA-approved to restore volume in the lower face and the hands. The product has a gel carrier that works immediately after injection to fill in lost volume. Once the product is injected, the CaHA works like a scaffold to support the natural production of collagen and elastin in the skin. Even after the carrier gel is absorbed, these CaHA particles can cause the effects of Radiesse treatments to last for many months. Radiesse can last for a year or more after injections.

Sculptra®

Sculptra is another type of collagen-stimulating dermal filler. It is made from poly-L-lactic acid particles which prompt a response in the body to begin producing more collagen. One of the benefits of Sculptra is its long-lasting effects. This dermal filler can be known to work for up to 2 years after injection. If you are looking for a long-lasting treatment that provides a subtle lifting and refreshing look, Sculptra may be right for you.

Where Can Dermal Fillers Be Used?

Dermal Fillers Under Eyes

Hyaluronic acid fillers are the best type of fillers for under the eyes. These easily dissolvable fillers can be used to reduce under-eye wrinkles and help resolve dark circles. Many brands such as Restylane and Juvederm include thinner products that are perfect for this more sensitive area.

Dermal Fillers for Cheeks

The cheek area often requires more structure and lift. Thicker products such as Restylane Lyft and Juvederm Voluma® XC can help to lift and contour the cheeks and give them a more youthful and refreshed shape.

Dermal Fillers for Lips

If you want your lips to have more volume or you want to correct lips that have an uneven shape, dermal fillers for the lips can be a great option. We use thinner products that feel natural and moveable under the skin while plumping the lips and providing a more even shape.

Non-Surgical BBL

Do you want to add volume to your buttocks but are not interested in surgical options? Sculptra can be used to help enhance the size and shape of your buttocks through collagen and elastin stimulation. It can be used to help fill in areas that are dimpled because of cellulite, improve the texture of the skin, and create a more balanced shape.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

The length of time that a dermal filler will last will depend on the type of dermal filler you and your doctor choose. Hyaluronic acid fillers can last anywhere from a few months up to a year and a half. Some people choose to have booster treatments after several months to help retain their ideal results. Hyaluronic acid fillers can also be dissolved if you want the results to disappear faster.

The results of Sculptra can last up to 2 years as your body continues to produce collagen and elastin. After this, the area can be treated again if you want to continue benefiting from the treatment. Some patients get injections once a year to be able to enjoy continuing results.
