Cosmetic treatments are often surrounded by complex terminology that can make it harder to research which treatments are right for you. However, at The Face Place, we enjoy demystifying cosmetic treatments to help you to become an active participant in the health and beauty of your skin. We also enjoy recommending treatments that help you address your specific concerns and make you feel more confident. One of the treatments that many of our patients ask about is neurotoxin injections.

Neurotoxins and neuromodulators, while big words, are common and effective treatments that are used to help relax lines and wrinkles in the face. They can be a helpful tool for you as you seek to revitalize and refresh your appearance.

We offer many different brands of neuromodulators such as Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau which can each be used in different capacities for a beautiful and natural-looking result.

What Are Neurotoxins and How Can They Be Used? | The Face Place

What Are Neuromodulators?

When something makes you happy, surprised, or angry, nerve impulses tell your muscles to move to create facial expressions. However, when muscles contract, it can cause the skin on your face to fold. Over time, these lines become more deeply ingrained in the skin and can become more pronounced when you smile or frown.

Neuromodulators, such as the common ingredient botulinum toxin type A, are medications that are used to help soften these muscle movements so that lines and folds are no longer created. These injections help target locations such as the forehead or next to the eyes to smooth dynamic lines.

When a neuromodulator is injected into the muscles that create these lines, the product blocks these nerve impulses and the movement of this muscle is restricted. With experience, medical professionals can inject these products so precisely that lines are softened without restricting facial expressions. This can create a very natural look that can create a youthful appearance without making it look like you have had anything done.

What Are Neurotoxins?

“Neurotoxin” is simply another word to describe a neuromodulator. This term can cause some confusion due to the fact that “toxin” often comes with negative connotations. However, in products such as Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin, the neurotoxin is simply a protein that is isolated from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. There are no bacteria present in the formulation, and the medication is not toxic to your system.

Instead, the product only has an effect on the region where it is injected. Effects are temporary as your body will then metabolize and eliminate the product over the next few months. If you have any questions about neurotoxins and their uses, you can contact us for a consultation.

What Are the Different Types of Neuromodulators?

When it comes to neuromodulators, there are many different products to choose from. While all of the neuromodulator injections that we offer are made using the same ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, these products are not interchangeable and we love using each for different applications.

Botox

Of all of the neuromodulators, Botox has been around the longest and subsequently is the name that most of our patients recognize. Of all of the brands, it is the only product that has FDA approval for three different locations: forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. As a result, this product is often chosen for patients who wish to have all three treated at the same time. It is a more potent formulation and is perfect for small areas that can benefit from more aggressive treatments.

Dysport

Dysport is a product that has been FDA-approved for use on glabellar lines, also known as frown lines. If this is your main area of concern, Dysport may be a good choice. The product can also be used for other areas such as the forehead. As a more diluted product that spreads more quickly, it is often beneficial for larger areas that require more subtle results.

Xeomin

Of all of the neurotoxins, Xeomin is the purest formulation. This product does not contain additional proteins. This can make it a good product for patients who are concerned about antibody resistance or for individuals who have allergies to certain protein additives. Xeomin is also often considered a lighter treatment that can create very natural-looking results.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau is the newest FDA-approved neuromodulator and it comes with unique benefits. Because of its Hi-Pure technology, Jeuveau can work faster than other similar injectables. While patients need to wait two weeks or more to begin to see results with other products, Jeuveau can begin to take effect in as little as two days.

What Can You Expect From Neuromodulator Treatments?

Regardless of which neurotoxin you and your doctor choose, the treatment process is the same. The product is injected into specific points in the treatment area using a tiny needle. During your treatment, we will have you make facial expressions and mark the points on your face where injections will be most beneficial. The injections themselves take a very small amount of time which means your whole treatment can be done in under half an hour.

There is no need to worry about having to take too much time off from work. Aside from some redness and swelling at the injection sites (which are usually very mild and go away quickly), you won’t have any social downtime. While you should stay upright for a few hours post-treatment and avoid strenuous exercise, you can return to all other normal activities.
